I guess it all depends on where you live and use it. I have the $6.00 Auto Zone one and it works great.
That's what I use....works fine....

Get the antenna tape from West Marine. It's $35-40.00 and tapes up on the underside of your faring. Way better reception than stock, cleans up the bikes' looks, and no one gets poked.

got mine at auto zone. about 12" and has the coiled section. looks like the old cell phone antennas. i can still hear my stations. for my trip this summer i will have my mp3 player plugged in too.

Have you thought about cutting the stock one? I took a few feet off the one on my SG, looks good, no reception loss and it doesn't poke me anymore when I walk around the bike. Cost me 45 seconds of my time to cut it.
