Scotty, the cheapest thing you can do to your RGU to lower temps here in Texas is to remove your lower fairings. Pretty simple to do and only takes about 10 minutes for both. I removed them on my 15 Ultra a couple of weeks ago and it really makes a difference. When the weather turns cooler this fall/ winter I will put them back on. Until then I am enjoying the cooler ride, both in stop and go and on the road.
This is the number 1 cheap mod to cool things down. $200 gets you Fullsac 2" OEM muffler mod and increased air flow from the motor and performance improvement.. (hot exhaust out) Floor board extenders, $35 help also. Stock header decatted is fine for cooling unless you're doing upgrades. The Fp3 is also a help that is easy to adjust with any changes you might make. Anything after that nets you small gains per dollar spent.
removing your lowers will not lower your engine temps. it may reduce the amount of heat that YOU feel, but that isn't the same. the lowers are designed in such a way as to direct air to your cylinders. remove them, and you remove that funnel.
now, as a compromise, I remove the doors in the warmer months, which allows for more airflow over my legs, which helps some with the felt heat, but still funnels some air to the engine.
We can agree to disagree scratch. I know what I've experienced on mine, as well as what the tuner told me he has experienced.
Thank for the list from DK's thaose are some great inexpensive or free way to try and cool it down. I'm going to try some of those.
With this bike, I am not falling in to all of the performance mods, it runs great as is. One of the things that used to bite me on my old ride was changing things up, usually cause me new issues I had to resolve.
One thing I bought that really helps keep the burning pain off of my right calf is a pair of higher harness boots. I wear the HD Hustins. Blocks a lot of the heat, and my calf no longer feels like it's frying.- something to give a try if you don't want to deviate from stock..

great info on cooling. tank lift seems interesting
how high do you have to go, is 1 inch enough?
The lowest we've ever tested is 1.5". Don't know what 1" will do.
The keys are to uncover the top of the engine, so that the tank is not trapping the heat, AND to get the front of the tank angled up enough that the air will flow under it, hitting the engine, instead of over it, hitting the riders chest.
The mods I made to my bike definitely helped. My second dyno tune also made my bike run better but the bottom line is to avoid stop and go traffic and stay moving. I also remove my lowers which helps keep me a little cooler but I'm not sure what it does for engine temps. I know that is not an option on your bike. I still think a carb runs much cooler than EFI.
