It goes over the stock ring--but in order to get rid of the gap, you have to loosen the stock ring. Basically, this will allow the overlaying trim ring to tighten in behind the stock ring eliminating any gap at the bottom. Even though the gap will be completely gone, the fit/finish where the 2-ends of the new trim ringcome together on the bottom isn't all that great--BUT, it looks a lot better than the gap.
I have an 01 RKC. Had a similar problem when I got the bike. Loosened the stock ring and was able to get a good fit on the trim ring (same as Kreuzen indicates above). I don't havea picture but it is pretty close together, about 1/32 gap. Not perfect but it is even. Hope this helps.
They are junk!! Had my headlight ring off the scoot and on the bench,and it still wouldnt fit right, still had the gap!!! Took it to the Harley Shop and had the tech mess with it and they couldnt get it to fit right. This is all with the visor style. Switched to the French style and same thing. Another tech came in and said "thats as good as they get, they all have the gap". Returned it and bought one from J&P and fits great and they are seamless.
Heres some threads with alot more peeps that couldnt get them to fit. Some peeps can live with the gap and seam, not me. Looks cheap.....
The gap, I put up with it on my Lowrider, not going to have it on my RK Cl, so I'll not be installing those visored rings - at least not until Harley solves the gap problem.
I agree with Kreuzen and others who say to loosen the original headlight ring first. Even the dealership mechanics don't seen to know this as I got myRKC back from a dealership handlebar change and it wasn't even close to the 1/32" gap I had before. I think it's helpful to have someone push down on the top of the new ring to keep it low in the gap created when you first begin to tighten the new ring. Even though you loosened the original ring, all will be tight again when the new trim ring is tightened into the gap created.
Guess I got lucky. The one thing my dealership has done that's went smooth is getting the headlight trim on with no gap. Had them do it the same day they put on my pipes.
Mine did the same think on my RK Police. I did find, however, that I was able to tighten it a little bit more every week that it was on the bike. There's still a slight gap but not as large as when I first installed it.
