2000 flhr
Hello new member here. I just purchased a used 2000 FLHR and was going to change the oils and plugs. The guy I bought from said he built up the motor new pistons and pipes built did not give me any specifics. Tricked out pistons i think he said.
Should the engine oil be checked on the kick stand or holding straight up ?
Anyway what should i be running for tranny and primary oils as well any specific spark plugs should be used and the gap of the plug ?
I have read about the red line tranny oil on here buth ther is no dealer within 50 miles of me.
Any other service help would be great. This is my 1st HD so i want to try and do things right.
Thanks for the help and sorry for the dumb questions

Oil should be checked on the jiffy stand.
If I were you, if only to avoid scorn from other members of this forum, I'd invest in a service manual. Best $48 you will ever spend.

Stock HD plugs will do just fine,NGK or Champion will get the job done, don't waste your money on goofy unobtanium multi electrode or whatever magic plugs.Any decent local parts store should be able to get Redline or Lucas product for you,if not Gee&Gee Racing in Leduc will happily send you some if Gasoline Alley can't .

I think there's something to say about multi elecrrode / ground plugs as it helps introduce a better spark to produce a more uniform flame front into the combustion chamber buy better design.
Now I'm not talking about the squish band area of the cylinder head, just the way the spark is used / introduced to the air / fuel mixture at the beginning of ignition.

Yes it does theoretically, buuuuut not sure if its worth the payout compared to standard plugs. Some will swear by it, as it appeals to making one "feel good" by paying more for it so must be superior. Simple marketing promotional tactics 101. Most of their advertisements use made up technical terms & names that has you instantly grabbing for your wallet.
Buuuut then if it makes you feel good, it can't be that bad.... Right!

Plus, we're talking about two cylinder, antique technology engines here...not engines that are engineered with the ultimate in flame fronts in mind. Any improvement...and I'm not saying that there isn't any...would be miniscule at best. Back when I was young and pretty dumb, I tried the latest and greatest spark plugs in my Harleys...never noticed a whit of difference. So, now, although I do go to the dealership for my plugs...and I wouldn't hesitate to use a Champion/Autolite/NGK/whatever if I needed to...I just get the basic cheapest I can get. Works fine. Plenty of power from the engine. 44-46 MPG. Nothing to fix or improve upon.
Theres quite a few good vids on YouTube comparing multi ground plugs compared to stock $3 ones including some excellent slow motion footage on flame front interduction to the combustion chamber.
Engines and spark plugs have come a long way my friend along with cdi ignition.
Watch the vids and make your own mind up , but me on the other hand , I'll spend the extra couple bucks cos with out the proper bang you don't get no where fast
