Default Idle, neutral, clutch engage-dis, drag on motor?

Noticed yesterday that while sitting on bike at idle in neutral, when I let the clutch out before I shut it off, there is a friction type of noise and it kinda lugs the motor down a little. At this point I didn't even check primary level or anything, thought someone else has maybe seen, or in this case, heard this? Thanks in advance for any input.
EDIT: Did a starter drive (all *****) replacement last fall, maybe something to do with it? Again, thanks all.

Your primary is spinning any time the engine is running. What you did engage was the transmission, the input shaft side of the gears.

Normally there is a little bit of noise and drag, as spinning those gears in the oil takes a wee bit of power. But not much and it should barely make any difference at all to an idling engine.

Yours is making noise and lugs the engine down noticably. This is not as it should be. Bearing wear comes to mind quickly.

Were it my bike, I'd check the transmission oil level and condition on the dipstick. Then I'd do an oil change, and look at the drained out oil closely. Hopefully, there is nothing of interest in it. But, there well might be.

Thanks FT. Just to clarify, the trans fluid, correct?

Yes, transmission fluid.

I am not a Harley expert, so don't disgregard what big-mike said above. Especially if it's basically a transmission input shaft bearing by a different name.

The transmission input shaft has no bearing it rides on two sets of needle bearings that are in the output shaft the the output shaft rides on the transmission main bearing now the inner primary bearing helps support the main shaft where it enters the primary. It's hard to wrap your head around the shaft in a shaft deal that spin a different rpms

Now are you low on transmission flui? If so can you tell where it's leaking? If it's low and you fill it does it act normal?

Thanks Mike. I'll check it when I get home this evening. But there are no drips or spots under it at all.

Trans fluid level is perfect on dipstick, looks perfectly clean and does not smell burnt or anything.
It's an 08 and one of my friends mentioned that year was known for a trans issue of some sort, but could not recall exactly what it was. Any ideas there? Again, thanks all.
