When I set my cruise control the green C come on in the gauge but when I let off the throttle it does not stay set. Any ideas on what I should check
By not stay set, do you mean the green light turns to red and the cruise control disengages, or do you mean the green light stays on, but the cruise control fails to work?
If the former, the green light turns red, the various suggestions above about the switches and such are relevent.
If the latter, the green light stays lit but the cruise control fails to work, the actuator flat cable or tape is worth investigating.
Three things turn off cruise: front brake switch, rear brake switch, and roll off switch on idle cable. Disconnect each to find the problem. Then there is the handlebar switch itself? If it still doesn't work troubleshoot the module.
There are other things that will turn off CC but I agree those three are most likely given the OPs description.
First place I'd look is the roll off switch.
It should also be noted that the FSM has a complete troubleshooting guide for the CC.

The light stays green. but the cc does not stay set when I let go of tghe throttle.

then I think you've a problem between the carburetor/throttle-body and the cruise control unit on the left of the behind the cover. I suspect it's disconnected. Be it a broken tape or the tape connection has broken.
