99 Electra Glide help

While riding today I rolled through and intersection, i accelerated and shift to 3rd gear when i did it acted like it didn't shift into gear. So i shifted again and released the clutch had no power to rear wheel, the engine rev'd but the bike just coasted to a stop. No unusual noise. I pulled clutch in several times and tried down shifting and up shifting. the bike will roll freely without even pulling in the clutch. I checked the drive belt first and it is tight and didn't notice any damage to it. While loading the bike on the trailer i did notice a noise while pushing it. Im going to pull the primary inspection cover tomorrow, and may pull the Derby cover off. What do I need to be looking for and what could be the failure. Going to see if I can get it into my Indy soon as I can get the $$$. Thanks in Advance

well that dose not sound good.if the compensator and or the clutch basket let go in the primary the chain would be make all kinds of noise slapping around in there.same if the chain broke.only other place would be the tranny.is your trans linkage tight or sloppy?if its lose it may be traveling to far to get it in gear.check the spline on the shift arm on the trans shaft,i had a 98 that stripped out.before i tore any thing apart i would be checking the linkage real close.make sure nothing slipped or moved,good luck.
