Default Engine idle question

So I was riding yesterday in heavy stop & kind go traffic and it was pretty damn hot out. When sitting at a light, the engine RPMs would increase a little bit on their own, If I blipped the throttle, they would go back down to regular idle speed for 5 or 6 seconds then increase again.

I took a different way home & it didn't happen at all since I jumped on the pkwy & didn't hit any traffic on the way back. Bike ran great in between traffic & on the way home otherwise. My last tank of gas was some no-name brand 87 Octane, which is what the station only had. I threw in a bottle of Techron and topped off with 93 but didn't ride afterwards. Will burn the tank off this weekend & see what happens.

Anybody else come across this? I thought it may be the EIMS but from what I read the idle would normally be lower.

The bike is a 2013 RK with a little over 14k miles. Last oil change I did about 1k ago & put in M1 V-Twin.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Did you check the diagnostics and see if any codes come up? Do that before you go for your ride.

Will do that during my lunch break. Did not think to do that. This is why I love this place.

the motor oil is part of the cooling system- it moves heat from the hottest parts of the motor ( pistons, heads, bearings) to be dispersed to the air.

the volume and pressure of the oil is related to the rpms, and the motor will vary rpms to move oil around
( with a device like the fuelpak3 you can open the map and look at the cells which relate idle speed to temps)

IF you are stopped with no throttle, the motor may shut down the rear cylinder ( so that just air is pumped through the rear to remove heat)- this mode "EITMS" will cause the idle to be "funny".
when active the cruise/motor icon will light on the dash

blipping the throttle will turn off this mode instantly, but will return again if the throttle position returns to and stays at zero

Here's a screen shot of the tables on my bike- these will not be the same as yours ( I edited mine)- but representative of what the ecm may be doing:

The system will also lean/rich the mixture at idle for the same type of reason when engine is hot. That makes a very distinct change in exhaust note. but you may not notice it with stock exhaust.

i had a buell lightning that started doing that. Never could figure out the problem so i sold it. It would run fine cold, once really warmed up and especially if stuck in traffic or a hot day out at a stoplight the RPM's would go up and i would have to rev the engine to get them to go back down. After a while it just got worse so at a stoplight the RPMs would go up and down over and over on thier own, no help by me. Sounded stupid, like i was sitting there revving it myself. I took it into two different indy mechanics that tried everything (at my expense) and nothing fixed it. It drove me nuts so i finally just sold it. Not sure if he ever figured out the problem.
