Default Clutch Cable Length with Bar Swap

Looking to put a set of 12 inch apes on my 2009 SG. Not sure how much longer over stock the clutch cable needs to be. Anyone made this swap and happen to know? Thanks

I put 12 inch bars on my 2010 ultra classic and started with a 6 inch over cable and it reached but was tight so I used 8 over.

There is no easy answer, as it can depend on the precise shape of the bars. Does the manufacturer offer any recommendations? Same comment applies to wire extensions, if necessary.

You "might" get away with using the stock cable if you reroute it.

As Mr. Brown said, no pat answer. When I did the deed, I ordered, received, and installed the 12" bars first before worrying about wires, hoses, and cables. I found that the throttle position sensor wires were no biggie...plug and play. The wires from the controls also turned out to be no biggie either. Coming out of the bars, they weren't long enough to reach where the OEM positioning of the matching plugs were, but I just rerouted those wires and had plenty of room. The only thing I needed was an eight inch longer brake hose and an eight inch longer clutch cable...but I was able to determine that easily with the bars already mounted, no guesswork.

The disadvantage to that was I had to wait for the hose and cable to arrive, but for both, it was like only three days. Yeah, I know guys wanna get it all done in a day or a weekend, so you can get back on the road, but this is a pretty good project for the off season...I just didn't want to guess at what I needed then have to re-order and wait again...I'd guess that you could go the same way on your '09 FLHX as I did with my '11 Street Glide...I had plenty of excess when done.

If you are buying a set of bars that have a Drag Specialties part number follow this link and get what has been tested and will work.

I put 12" bars on my 09 SG and I think I went 8" over but didn't run the cable through the fairing.

I figured the least bends the better. I used the hole in the fairing to run the power cord for my GPS.
