I ride until it is to cold to be fun. My DR. said I should wear them to avoid getting sick and stuffed up in the colder months. I have been doing it for a few years now.I can tell a difference.
I wear them all the time. Got some ringing in the ears due to some health issues so I do hat I can now. I normally wear the orange construction plugs you'd find at the hardware store.
I have the plug phone ear phones mentioned earlier in this post. They work as advertised and for $15 (on sale when I bought them) they were a good purchase.
My favourite ear plugs are Etymotic ETY Plugs designed mostly for listening to loud concerts. They only reduce noise by 20db but it's a full frequency reduction that still allows me to hear a little more than the 32db foam plugs. Unfortunately they will not fit in my 3/4 helmet but should work fine in a 1/2 helmet.
I use them quite often operating heavy equipment for 6-8 hours and they still allow me to hear the 2 way radio. I struggle to understand conversations on the 2 way while wearing the foam plugs, probably from operating with no hearing protection for years.

They make the ER-20 which has a short stem. They're made for use with head gear. I use them with my FF helmet and fit nice. As I mentioned in my previous post, I like to use my HF-5 for music or just a plain ear plug with my half, as they reduce noise better than the Ety Plugs or ER-20.
I use ones I got from harbor freight, come on a lanyard with a little tube that helps push them in. They work great, just be careful when removing causing they are kinda airtight, so just wiggle them a little as you pull them out.
Another plus to wearing plugs is it is amazing how quiet the motor sounds, but when you ride without them motor sounds like its ready to self destruct. lol
I get the Westone plugs for free, from my school district (fringe benefit of being a band director). They work great, and are really comfortable. They also have different attenuation inserts that let you reduce sound various decibel levels. They're a little spendy, but well worth it.
