Default 2002 Road King Hard Bag issues

2002 Road King, 79,000 miles, I've put the last 6,000 on it.

1) hard bags are cracking from the hole that the rubber grommet is in for the mounting stud, to the top rim of the hard bag. There is 1 crack at each hole - some cracks go almost straight up, while one ran horizontal for an inch, then angled up to the rim. As far as I know they are the stock bags, haven't dug into them to see if they are plastic or fiberglass. I've searched everywhere - I cant believe no one makes a steel strip or something to reinforce this area? I can't be the only guy with cracked bags? How do you fix?

2) Bags popped open at 80 Mph...both bags did it on that trip, never popped open before. the first time the left side popped open, I just thought I didn't have it latched right, then the right side popped open about 50 miles down the road. I keep them locked all the time now. Is there a fix for this? they go over center, but without a lot of effort to hold them close, (seems to latch easier than they used to) so I'm thinking the latch bounced open when I hit a bump just right.

Check and make sure that they are not in a bind. Make sure they have the rubber washers that go between the latch and the inside of the bag. If they do, you might want to loosen the two bolts on each side for the mounts up top. Then, make sure that the bags are seated properly on the bar underneath and that the brackets and bags aren't in any kind of bind.

I have actually used a dab of JB Weld on the fiberglass bags for the cracks that you mentioned. I just used the regular JB Weld intended for metal because I had some on hand. Worked great for years.

Are the bags sitting down onto the lower rail correctly? Rather sounds like they may not be, and are instead hanging from the mounting fasteners.

when I put the bags back on, they "find their spot", and when I push the mounting stud through the grommet, it finds the wire without moving the bag, so I think everything is lined up ok.

Most weight I put in them is 2 gallons of water once in a while. I usually have my laptop and bag in there when commuting to work, so that don't weigh a ton.

Bike does seem to shake a lot. Its a hot motor, Andrews 37 cams, 10:1 pistons, head work. In 6000 miles, I'm on my 2nd rear exhaust support tab (little L-Bracket just above the starter). I just replaced the front motor mount, seemed to help with the shake a little.

Let's see a pic of where the bag is cracking to better help you out.

Default tighten the latches

I can't help with the cracking but I'm interested to hear what everyone else says. My 2002 has a small crack forming around the front hinge on the tour pak.

Check out this video on how to tighten the latches. Mine were loose and this worked but I keep them locked all the time anyway.
