I was going to install one on my Ultra and the salesman told me to save my money. He said it will drive me crazy. He said take the money and put it into a cooler if I must. T.

Wow, it's a good thing you guy's don't check your head temp all the time or you wouldn't be getting any riding done.

All I'm saying is the oil temp guage shows the oil temp going up and down depending on a lot of different riding factors and I find myself monitoring the guage more than I do enjoying the ride. It's not like I can actually do something about the oil temp, and if I didn't have the guage I wouldn't know the difference anyway.

What this has to do with a car/truck guage I don't know.

had my oil temp guage put in monday-changed to amsoil on wed. bike feels, runs, sounds better on amsoil but have no idea the proper range of temp the oil should be running. dealer said "heat management" kicks in at 326 to 366-so whta am i striving for here???
I assume that range is the head temp measured by the sensor on the engine, and the values others have been giving you are oil temps. No oil could tolerate even 326°. So what are your oil temps now that you have a gauge?

Don't listen to the anti-gauge crowd. If I didn't have a gauge I would be worrying more about whether or not the temp was too high, so I want to be informed. If it's too high, stop on the side of the road and let 'er cool down, or take other steps to reduce it. Knowing is being able to react when there is a problem, and that isn't a bad thing.

Mine hit 230° for the first time today in 93° heat and city traffic, after a day of riding at ~200° on the backroads. I'd like it to go no higher, or even too low, and if it does go higher than 230° I'll add a second oil cooler. If air temps were 80° I'd be running 180° while moving, maybe as high as 200° in traffic. It all depends on how fast you're moving, how hot it is outside, whether you're in a headwind or tailwind, rain or shine, etc. Lots of variables factor into your oil temp, as it's an air-cooled engine and the temps will fluctuate much more than those in a water-cooled engine.
