Default Nasty Lifter Pounding

I have a 2014 Electra Glide Ultra with the age old problem of excessive lifter noise.. It has 15,000 miles on it and I switched back to regular 20w50 oil from synthetic. The cold starts and warm starts after hour or so for a meal are sounding more like a rod knocking than lifters. It does quite down after a couple few minutes.Everyone that has listened says they never heard one that bad. Dealer says "some are just louder than others".It did'nt sound this way for the first half of its miles.Dealer dont seem to want to help even if I pay. It's embarrasing to start in front of people. It has to be fixable?

I would put a set of adjustable pushrods in it and if got the extra cash a new set of standard S&S lifters.

It's getting to the point where I'm going to have to re-think my "I won't use adjustable push rods" stance. Lifters are wear items these days, like every 15 or 20K wear items; even the "good ones". My 96" to 107" build that Kirby at Vee Twin is doing is gonna have them.

Let the bike sit for whatever period it takes for the noise to start. Remove the pushrod clips & drop the pushrod tubes. Bump the starter until one by one the pushrods/lifters are all the way down.... if you have a collapsed lifter it will be easy to find

I get my lifters here... http://www.larrysmotorcyclemachine.com/lifters.html

Of course it is fixable.

Are you able to disassemble the cam chest and rocker boxes, or are you going to have a shop fix it?

Back to you...

Lifters have always seemed to be an Achilles heel for Harleys, and problems with them can show up at amazingly low mileage. If the Larry's Machine lifters are of high quality, as referenced by Rockout Products, that's an amazing price!

I've used adjustable pushrods for many years, because they came stock in the pans and shovels, and I've switched over to adjustables in my Evo, and my current Twinkie. Never a problem. I'm of the opinion that if you have to readjust them, once properly set, you have a problem in a part other than the pushrod, and the tappets are always my first suspect!

My current Twinkie had an excessive amount of valve noise. While I had it down to black out the rocker covers and pushrod covers, I installed a set of Rockouts...it was the best fifteen bux I ever spent, and cured my problem. Up until that time, although I had been aware of them because of this forum, I hadn't thought much about them. You might wanna start thinkin' about 'em too, OP. Just might be the source of your problem, and all you're risking it the price of the kit, plus gaskets, and it's always a good time to renew your breather assemblies, which are inexpensive.

and if you put a set of rock outs in it, go ahead and pull the push rods and put in a set of S&S lifters in it. Get rid of them crappy Mexico lifters.

I could not agree more with this statement. And S&S or equivalent adjustable pushrods. I personally gravitate more toward S&S stuff, but I'll also say that Feuling, JIMs, and Screaming Eagle products are of the same quality, and I would use them with confidence.

Bear in mind that the S&S standards are made in Mexico as well. The Premiums are USA made. To be sure, the S&S Standards are better than HD C lifters but if Made in USA is as important to you as it is me, you'll need to choose something else.
