Like everything else. Bandanas, chaps and t-shirt, and now masks. They have a purpose but some end up using to make a fashion statement.
I for one would wear it to protect my face from the sun. Instead I choose not to ride when it's extremely hot.
Chaps and t-shirt kills me on a 90° day. Explain that? Wait, no need.
They do have a purpose but the graphic versions with the skulls and clowns are just hiding the dumbass behind them. Trying to look tough but to the rest we just laugh. I only wore one out wear in the desert during high crosswinds with dust and before I had a full face helmet when riding in the cold. Took the edge off the cold air.
Wow, another fashion police post on the hdforum! I'm sure none of you guys remember being the stupid looking young guys that were following trends for your times. None of you wore Canadian tuxedos with your mullets? Denim vests covered in patches? Acid wash jeans tucked into your boots? Bell bottom pants? So judgemental of people you don't know and trends you don't understand or agree with. Live and let live.

To me, nothing says Real Biker than some fool wearing a skull face mask in high temperatures...OK, if you have a particular reason that's lost on me, fine, it's a free country, do what ya gotta do...I get that...
And wearing skull face masks has been around as a fad for at least ten years out here in SoCal! And for ten years, I've been shakin' my head...
All the tuff guys been doing this since the early 2000's. Full skull mask to cover the face while riding in a wife beater and shorts and ruining 20 grand worth of skin art to the sun.
It's all these new-age riders who have delicate skin and can't take the wind in their face + bugs in their teeth. All you can do is ride your own style and worry about your own 3' of control space.
I'm 63 and preach covering up. I go in twice a year to get AK burnt off my face from years of sun at high altitude.
My thoughts:
Live hard, die old and leave a good looking corpse.
