Default iron butt...??

Was in London Ontario this week and ran in to a small group of bikers from Guelph who were returning from Sturgis. There were six of them, all on touring bikes except one, who was on a Breakout. I was in awe that the guy could ride a Breakout 21 hours each way... his gear was bungee'd to the back rest. I am sure plenty of folks ride long distances on other than touring bikes, I just know that I could not.

Back when men were men and sheep were skeered, that was the way it was done. Wasn't that unusual, either...

Back in the mid 70's I had a boss that bought one of the first Goldwings. It came with nothing other than a bare bones bike. No faring, no saddlebags, no tour pack, no radio, I don't think it even had cruise of any kind. He bought a Honda accessory faring and we put it on at work. Man he was proud of that bike.
He took two weeks off (maybe 3, i dont remember) and left Indianapolis, rode up to Canada, across Canada to Alaska, back down into the states and cross country to Indy.
All alone, not in a group, no cell phone, no AAA and not much in the way of dealer support.
I don't mean to denigrate modern day "iron butt" riders but none of them hold much of a candle to what that man did...

Did an iron butt with 2 guys on 883s, no windshields.

And it rained for most of it.

Did it on a Suzuki marauder 800. 20 hours of loud *** hard chrome stripper pipes. No radio not even ear buds. On my street glide I could do it with ease.

I've got a trip for work coming up next week and am considering riding my Sportster. It's around 360mi each way. Figured that was a pretty long ride for a non-touring but I don't have anything on that guy! That's awesome!

In '09 I had a Suzuki M50 that I'd been commuting to work on, seat broke in, everything adjusted just the way I liked it. I rode it from NC to MA, stayed 2 days and rode it back. Everyone thought I'd lost my mind, but truthfully, it wasn't that bad at all, except getting through NY.

I had an angry ride once, back when I was 19. I needed to kick someone's *ss, but I was in Dallas and he was in Farmington, CT. Rode my '82 Suzuki GS550L from Dallas to Farmington in less than 30 hours. Wasn't prepared at all, just what I had on. Got cold and very wet through the Appalachians, especially at night. Got there and the turd left before I arrived, never to be heard from again. I guess he didn't like my state line phone calls to let him know I was getting closer and closer. Oh well, spun a u-turn and hauled it back to Dallas.
