I was planning on switching to the gear drive set up, but when I talked to our Dealer, he whips out two sets of gear drive setups that were stripped out. He showed them to me. The teeth were sheared right off.
I believe you saw some stripped gears. I also believe that your dealer is not being truthful about what happened to them.
That's right.... there was most certainly a blown out left crank bearing that came out of the same motor and I bet it got a Timken Bearing Conversion when it want back together.
I have 17500 miles on my 02'. It started making a noise almost like lifter noise. Anyway My mechanic said it is pretty common to wear them out if you ride harder than normal. Well I do. He said they have done about 200 switches to the direct gear cam drivers with push rods. Is this the best option? They are from S&S.
Another option I'm in the middle of is the Andrews '07 style conversion for older twin cams.It switches to hydraulic cam chain tensioners and roller chains. It uses 11lbs of tension instead of 35lbs in the spring type. Fairly easy do it yourself job. Not saying this is the best option but I bet the '07 guys will not feel the need for gear drive cams! http://www.andrews-products.com/moto...nstall_Kit.htm About $900 with cams and all HD parts needed including adjustable push rods and new stock lifters.
Hey Mako, Let me send your dealer friend a couple pics of my whole cam plate and crankshaft that was torn up when my chain tensioner blew out. Had to replace the crank/flywheel. I was lucky that there was no top end damage but it was still $3500 worth ofrepairs and a $600 Uhaul bill. You have a $20-25K bike with a $25 chaintensioner.....what's wrong with thispicture?! My indy says he sees one or twotensioer failures a week. The damage is not usually as bad as mine but where mine happened I couldn't stop for awhile so it did more damage.Don't hesitate to go with gear cams,I went with S&S 585G and love them. Noticeably more pop and that nice lope at idle do to the higher lift and more duration.
Any word on woods cams and their gear drive setup?
They are pricey but good cams. I had TW 5G's on my 03 Fatboy. Good cams for low end grunt. They could be a little peaky at times, but they pulled hard. They were relatively quiet for fairly high lift cams, but I never warmed up to the gear whine that most gear drive cams produce.
I'm a happy camper with my gear drive. I did the same as xxxflhrci and got the whole shabang from american classic motors on ebay for $535 to my door. I bought a nifty little combination tool for the inner bearings that works great and got a good deal on the adjustables and also went with new lifters that were about $50 (gaterman lifters that are HD "B" equivalents).
