I had the same issue on my (then new) '14 SGS and '16 CVO SG. On the '14 I did the math and verified on some trips, compared to other bikes, while I had 20k mls on the odometer, which was closer to (less then) 19,000.
I brought this up to the service manager, but since I was just out of warranty, or maybe not, they would not do a thing about it.
Contacted HQ and they said it's within normal specs. NORMAL SPECS? I guess 5% is normal to HD...
Mine was off till I flashed a new tune to it with the Power Vision. Now the speed matches my gps exactly
If it's driving you crazy, a power vision tuner will allow you to adjust your mileage calibration to whatever gearing you have, OEM or aftermarket.... but I wouldn't spend the money for a power vision, just to get a calibrated speedometer.
Don't misunderstand, there are many good reasons to get a Power Vision tuner, I have two (long story)... but just to calibrate the speedo, not so much...
Come on, gents...5% is within specs on most any automobile or motorcycle I've ever owned, and it's usually about ten percent! Cryin' about that is just silly, and as Keithhu says, can be worked out with a tuner...as long as you have other reasons to have one!
My '09 reads about 2.6% high which I've confirmed over and over again during the 80k miles I've been riding this bike. I've compared it to a couple different GPS units, I've counted mile markers, and compared it to other odometers. Always the same.
That's Harley's way of saving a little money on warranty work. "Man....you're just over the miles on warranty. You'll have to pay for this repair out of pocket. Go around to the parts counter and ask for some Screamin Eagle lube, you're gonna need it to keep from screamin."
Except that the Harley warranty is two years with no mileage limit.
