I have a 2017 HD Ultra Limited. Can I install high flow intake and slip ons, then ride20+ miles before installing tuner without doing damage to motor? problem is I have no laptop and freind does (and hes better with computers than i am, lol. Thanks in advance for any info
Should be no problem, Your S1 Air Cleaner will increase throat diameter allowing more CFM flow, the exhaust will allow more CFM flow but you are held to roughly 85 CFM/Cyl max until you change the rev limiter which will bump up to roughly 100 CFM max per cyl or 200 CFM intake. Easy does it until the tuning is done. As a side note you would expect to be lean and if you are pushing a lean situation it will act as cold natured and sneeze in the aircleaner like it needs to be choked.
A related novice question - can I just install a high flow air cleaner without making any other adjustments? Would that benefit me in any way? Would the bike run better?
IMO-The biggest difference in the Stage 1 air cleaner is it does not have the pilot to center the filter in the throttle body. The pilot may be made of 0.04" metal and in the diameter you may lose 0.08" or 2mm from the throttle body inside diameter. Using the Stage 1 air cleaner without a pilot you gain back the Throttle ID which IMO again really does not come into play until you reach Wide Open Throttle(WOT) at max RPM's therefore maximum Cubic Feet per Minute (CFM) through the throttle body. And in my opinion you really dont need more CFM;s until you increase the max RPM rev limiter.
For the record K&N sells a high flow air cleaner that has the pilot flange just like the stock H-D. If you dont do the stage 1 RPM increase you may not need the Stage 1 air cleaner ASM.... Just my opinion.

On a 2017? Don't waste your money unless you are doing it for looks. No, it would not benefit you, unless you like more intake noise. No, it will not run "better" by replacing the stock airbox.
Run one installation for maybe 20-50 miles then install the second half and drive conservatively for a few miles, the ECM and O2 sensors will get you in the ball park. The dealers reflash will put you at the EPAs lean run. A tuner will let you add some extra fuel.
Thanks everyone for your response. Much appreciated...
Like Q said...spend the money for looks only. A "high flow" air cleaner is nothing more then a marketing ploy. Your motor will NOT flow any additional air over stock (unless the stock is so clogged that it doesn't flow now). Even completely removing the air cleaner will NOT cause the motor to flow more air over stock.
One needs to make significant changes in intake, heads, pistons, headers, and exhaust to warrant a "high flow" air cleaner.
With respect to slip-on's...it's possible to reduce the necessary back pressure enough to cause a noticeable decrease in performance. Be prepared for some tuning/running issues if these simple mods are not done correctly.
