I have HOG roadside assistance that I upgraded to the unlimited miles towing. Thankfully I have never had to use it. To avoid this problem I renewed my cable at the 40k miles mark. I didn't want to wait for it to fail. It's better that you pick the time and place to renew wear items than to let the machine pick.

I've had them break a couple of times. Once you get going you don't stop until you get home. It takes planning and *****. Otherwise it's tow time.

I had it happen once on my '81 FXS. Fortunately, traffic was very light. I shifted without clutch, got down to 1st gear well before stop lights, and approached slowly. Went through red lights turning right if necessary. Got to the expressway, and I was good until the exit, then 3 lights to home.

I don't understand why you couldn't kill your engine. Kill switch, ignition switch, or even brake to stop in gear, should turn it off.

I have had it happen twice 1st time on sportster, in the yard. I got lucky. 2nd time lucky as well only 3 miles from home. It popped pulling into tavern parking lot, with sand and gravel. I hit kill switch and slid rear tire for a few feet. Waited till I was clear to leave parking lot cranked it in 1st and shifted with throttle, found neutral pulling into drive way and coasted to garage. 50,000 miles. using the throttle to take load off tranny makes it easier to find neutral.

Exactly so, svarnster...more recently, I had the shift linkage come apart on my last Glide many miles ftom home, and I ended up hand shifting it like a jockey shift, but obviously I couldn't shift into and out of neutral at stops, so it was the same 'no stopping' at traffic lights. Fortunately I had all right turns all the way home!

It's coming back to me a bit more now. Planning the route as you go, so it's always right turns, helps a lot. Three rights instead of a left.
