As someone who has suffered a fractured shin from road debris, they are a decent deterrent but given the limited protection, especically on some of the thinner versions, installing lowers on the bike is more effective for road debris.
As to passenger use, see a high percentage of passengers using them as lowers are not real effective for passengers.

Sailmotion and I agree. My main thought was to aid in rocks etc. being kicked up and finding my shins. Granted, they may not be much good in a slide but I'm not planning on sliding any time soon. I'll leave that to the guys with the "**** ant" cars that like to do donuts in the street and leave lots of rubber behind. Dumb
