I have a 14 Dyna LR that I have owned since new. I have done some long weekend trips that just tear me up by time I get home. So I finally rode a 17 Street Glide. Wow! I was absolutely not expecting the quiet, smooth, comfortable ride that I got. No wonder you guys ride so much!
I didn't have time to ride a Road Glide. What are everyone's thoughts on one vs. the other? Is there a definitive advantage of the RG fixed fairing vs. the SG batwing fairing, or vice-versa?
I will definitely ride both before buying, but I am not sold on the looks of the RG. Just wanted to hear some thoughts.
You've only ridden one model. I suggest you also try an Ultra, as well as an RG. We all have views on batwing versus fixed, so I'll leave that subject for now!
The differences are preference concerning the fixed vs batwing. Everything else is the same. The only thing that I have heard complaint wise is glare off the infotainment screen being greater than on the batwing bikes due to the angle that it sits.

I have a 2017 street glide as well.[/QUO
I agree that the glare on the RG screen is bad and no way to fix it unless you always ride at night.

Reason: misread post
After three batwing Harleys I bought a '16 Road Glide Special. For me, it was a revelation. I love the frame fixed fairing; at parking lot speeds the bike feels light and is a breeze to handle. At 75 mph I'm totally comfortable. I should mention that I have added lowers, wind deflectors, and most importantly, an after market windshield (12" Windsplitter). Both are great bikes, but if you ride both I think your decision will be based on more than appearance.
I was in the same boat trying to decide. The batwing looks better to me but after riding the RGU I liked the fixed fairing ride better, and there are so many batwings on the road I also like having something different than the crowd.

I am on my 4th road glide, an 18. Had an 09 I put 47K on, a 12 I put 46K on and a 15 I put 44K on. Then I got a 17 Street glide, owned it for 11 months and put 20,526 miles on it.
I much prefer the road glide. Handles cross wind better, 18 wheeler wind turbulence better, no weight shift at slow speed when you turn the bars.
Ride both and see what you prefer.

There was an excellent YouTube done by (I think they were) 2 motorcycle magazine editors comparing the Bat Wing and Shark Nose Harleys. They touched on many aspects of the 2 designs. They both had the same pre-ride expectations that the Shark Nose [with it's frame-mounted fairing] would feel lighter in the front-end and slightly more nimble. Interestingly, after riding both, they both were of the opinion that the Bat Wing had the better ride. I got a sense that their reviews were fair and objective. I'd still ride both if I was you.

Oh no, by the time this thread is over or if it ever ends your head will be spinning.....go ride the RG and find out for yourself.
