Default Engine upgrade suggestions

Thinking its time for some power upgrades but unsure what to do. Have thought for a few years now, that a Fuel Moto 107, 555 cam upgrade was what I was going to do but now having other thoughts. Background: 13 Street Glide I bought new and have a FM 2-1-2 pipe, Jackpots, FM air cleaner and powervision. Bike currently has 42,000 mi and engine has never been opened beyond the primary cover or given any problems. Even still has original compensator. I've never thought I "needed" more power until this year riding two-up in the mountains loaded with luggage. And of course it would be fun to have more punch. I have seldom, as in maybe a few times, seen 5000 rpm. I need low to mid rpm torque and don't want to give up fuel economy, which is now consistently 40-41 mpg or reliability. Have been considering a cam upgrade only now too. Wood 222 or CR 570-2 have been a couple I have checked out. I'm open for suggestions.

I still think a Fuel Moto 10.25:1 compression 107 with 555 cams and stock heads would yield good bottom end and strong midrange for 2-up touring in the mountains.

I did the cams, but haven't done the jugs yet on my stripped down '10 RKC. But I'm not touring very far, and never 2-up, so I'm not looking for any increases in bottom end and I'm happy with what I've got for now.

But I'm no expert, call Fuel Moto and spend some time with them going over your riding style and goals. They'll steer you in the right direction.

Talking

Take a look at the FM website and read up on the various kits they offer. Then decide where your ambitions and depth of pocket coincide!

I have been to the Fuel Moto page so many times it's bookmarked. Thought I had it figured out with the 107 upgrade from them but now having second thoughts and wondering what else is out there. I see lots of claims on power increases with upgrades done and some with dyno sheets to back it up but seldom see fuel mileage numbers. Would like to hear from riders with 10k, 20k, 30k miles on the upgrades and what the real world experience has been like.

I ride a lot like you do, but not 2 up.. but lot's of touring not so much high end. I wasn't going to go for the L2 heads, but finally got talked into it by those in the know. I'm really glad I did, they make a big difference all over the rpm and throttle range.

I've got 20K on my build and just did the Target Tune and that added a whole new level of power and rideability to the overall ride.

If you can afford it, go for the heads and Target Tune upgrade and the 777s.

Call hillside if you're looking something tailored to your wants and needs...you're not stuck with a "kit". I'd say cams alone will get you a good bump but if want more you need headwork. Now headwork is key to unleashing the power but if you tour all over and say something goes wrong with the modified heads how longs it going to take to get fixed up and back on the road??? You might want to think about screaming eagle for heads...at least you have a shot at getting a replacement at a dealer. Maybe I'm wrong but that's what comes to mind when I think about going nuts inside my motor

I do ride solo 80% of the time, but when I take a trip its 2 up usually. So when you're not squeezing the fun out of it, any idea on MPG? Any reliability problems in your 20k?

with that many miles on the clock, go all the way.

get rhe outlaw 126, split the cases, weld and true the crank and be done.

its only $$ and you will not have it long

I just checked my mileage, the old skool way miles/gallons. I did 200 miles, in 80'F weather, here in New England. 41mpg, and then head temps run 260 via the Powervision, and the oil temp ran 200'F to 215 all day. (I have a basic Jagg 5 row oil cooler, not fans needed)

Go over and read this thread, all 228 pages of it, and hundreds of FM 107 riders, and you'll find 1 that comes to mind that had problems, and that guy wasn't using the suggested kit, but just part of FM's kit.

I'll say this, if you needed support and parts, it'd come faster and better from FM than anyplace else I know, including the local HD dealer. (just my opinion, but their service is beyond good)

...on the other hand, depends on how much you want/need and also affordability. A decent set of cams and you might be quite happy. I admittedly spent some good bucks on the engine, BUT, for me, I'm a fixed income retired guy and 29K for a new bagger wasn't in the cards, never mind all the other ergos (bars, seats, etc) it took to fit me just right.

Nice thing you've got going for you is you've got the Fuel Moto support for any mods you decide to do, he'll build you a new base map for your PV, and you're all set up with the right header/pipes and powervision. If you REALLY like the bike and see yourself keeping for a number of more years, GO FOR IT!!

I have the same build as old hippy except 999-6a cams. Over 16000 miles and consistent 41 mpg. I do 2/3 of time riding solo. Fuel milage doesn't really vary much. I've had zero issues.
The main reason I went with Fuel Moto was reputation and because they are within 2 hours of me. I have no regrets other than I always want more. If I lived in the east I would have gone with Hillside. Talk to builders and take their suggestions serious, its what they do!
