Default Replacing heated grips

well since i seem to be gettin nowhere on what might be wrong with my factory heated grips.... barely warm most of time ...and since a couple of us are planning a december 26 ride to the NC mountains again ( yea i know ) reckon i will just replace them... question is looks like they come with about a 10" pigtail with plug on each end.... where does it plug in at ? do i have to get into the fairing or what ? anyone know the difficulty here ? thanks

Did you take your bike to the dealer and see what they thought was the reason the grips aren't getting warm enough?

Should be two pig tails. One connects each grip together and one connects to acc power

the grips that are stock on the FLHTK at different that all the other Harley heated grips

you can get the same grips you have or any other stile but on all the others the wiring is different I know this because I ordered heated grips from the fourm here and they were the flthtk grips they worked fine but you have to have all the wiring for them

Factory grips have a two-wire power harness and the P&A catalog grips are three. I guess the 3rd has something to do with an accessory switch although mine wasn’t ever hooked to anything. Not to mention the P&A grips just don’t last. I recently installed a set of Airflow CVO grips. They are internally wired and will hopefully hold up longer than my previous two pairs of P&A grips.

Yes, you need to split the fairing to get to the wires.

I don't know if the '12 bikes are the same, but here's a post I made a while back about installing them on my '15.... https://www.hdforums.com/forum/touri...l#post14752098

You can see the installation instructions for aftermarket H-D grips on their Shop tab, which may help. You should also get a FSM if you don't have one, as that will guide you through much of what needs to be done.

OP

What did you end up doing? Did you replace and the new ones are working?

I have apparently messed up mine during my handle bar install. I have pulled it all back apart. Every thing looks fine.

I am leaning toward buying new also. Just courious what you found out.

Thanks

Replace them with heated gloves/gear. Nice and toasty all over, not just the insides of your hands. I will be headed out tomorrow morning and the temps should be about 40.
