Trade in
Values are lower then you would expect on trade in because of the new 96in motor. Most dealers are trading in at low NADA book. Strip any parts of that you can and sell them on eBay.
I traded in my 2001 a couple of weeks ago, and stripped everthing that I could that was not stock. I made nearly 1000.00 on ebay selling the accessories that I would have gotten no credit for on trade from the dealer. Heck, he even suggested it to me himself!

I took my decked out '04 RKC to my dealer and talked with them about a trade towards an '07 SG. They said they would give me about 14K in trade. I left the dealership and put the bike on Ebay. Three days later, I got the best of both worlds. I sold it to a guy for 16,700. Then I called my dealer and asked them if they would do an "in and out" with me. They said they would let me show the RKC as a trade for 16,700 and then sell it to my guy for 16,700. That saved me over a grand on taxes, so I netted almost 18k for the '04. That made the SG purchase not so painful. So, bottom line is sell it yourself. With the new engine and 6 speed the old ones will loose value everyday, imo. Good luck.
Keep in mind that the dollar amount that a dealer says they are giving you for your trade, may not actually be what they are giving you. In the car business, it is done all the time. Dealers have a mark up on the price they sell a vehicle for, so, in essence, they show more for your trade, and may add it to the price of the bike. Start off with what the dealer wants for the bike. Negotiate what you can pay for it. Once that is done, bring the trade into play, and then see what they give you for it. Then you can see what they are willing to 'actually' give you for your bike.
In any event, if the dealer doesn't want to work the deal you want, sell it outright. You will always get more money for your bike selling it privately. Sometimes it is more hassle, but if you have more time than money, sell it yourself.
Also, keep in mind that a '07 may have to be EPA compliant, and your Heritage does not. They sell a fairing for your bike, I have seen them. Maybe think about that. Buying parts to spruce up your bike, might be less expensive than financing a brand new ride.
Just my $0.02

thanks for the ideas. I am going to demo ride a SG today and see if i like it. If i like the ride themI will see what the deal gives me for mine.If not happy with trade, then I just won't do it...
When selling my 2000 softail deuce I tried privately to get 13900. for it, no go. The dealer sold it for me for 5% or 500. Well I ended up with 12500. Not too bad but less then I had in it.

What year was the Heritage? I still have some of the extras that I didn't sell with the bike. I kept the windshield for my son in laws bike, he's got one of those Yamahogs. The dimensions are the same as the Deuce.
