My 2003 FLTRI has not been ridden almost two seasons. A month ago l noticed sludge in the pan that l put under the bike. I want to resurrect it for next season. Is there any hope? How should I proceed? Thanks for any input.
Have you started the bike in the last 2 years? What is the sludge? Just dirt that has attracted to a bit of oil in the pan? What does the oil on the dipstick look like? I'd change the oil and gas and try to crank it over.
I would check and change engine oil, primary and trans. I would even remove the spark plugs and put some oil in the cylinders and raise the bike and turn motor over by turn rear wheel .

As has been said. Change all 3 oils, new spark plugs, drain gas and fill with new gas, charge up battery, change oil and air filter, air up tires Fire it up, go out and blow the dust off. Id do a flush and fill of brake fluid too.
The sludge in the pan that is exposed to atmosphere is in no way indicative of what is going on inside your case. The oils dripping in pan are attracting and retaining all the dirt and dust floating around. This isnt happening inside your engine.
If your battery is several years old, hasn't been charged in a couple of years and has been exposed to real cold (as opposed to Mississippi cold) it may very well have gone bad. You might consider taking it out and having it tested before you trust it out on the road.
I would do as some have suggested above, the fluids, battery, oil filter, and gas. Then see if it will fire, if so, then I would change all the rubber fuel lines, cables, and brake fluid.
