Default Battery/Engine Light

for some time now i have been having problems with my factory heated grips... hot, then warm, then right grip ok but left not etc...today, after 20 mile ride with grips on and working, after stopping and shutting down for 15 minutes, then starting bike up and going again, with the grips still on, the battery and engine light came on for 15 seconds or so until i turned grips down... immediately after adjusting grip setting, both lights went out and never came back on... bike runs fine and volt meter never changed from its usual 14 volts... 15000 on bike.... any thoughts ? regulator ? could short in left grip cause both lights to come on ? thanks guys

Not owning heated grips, but this sounds like you are overloading the electrical charging system. Turn grips off prior to start and increase temp till your lights are on then back off. One question for you, a lot of batwing riders will ride with passing lights on during the day, to look cool or safety reasons I don't know but safety works for me. Any way, turn off your passing lights and see what happens. Electrical heaters of any kind do draw a lot of power.

I would take a long look at your battery and connection. Grips are a big draw.

Battery and engine light is most likely going to be either the stator or the voltage regulator. Hope for the latter, it's cheaper and easier.

understand and appreciate your input but this is all stock... designed to handle everything turned on at once if needed...wouldnt be overloading system suddenly after 5 years .. ( unless regulator ) and... both lights went out as soon as i moved the dial on the grips... i did not have to turn them off.... trying to figure out if a bad connection in the grip switch would cause this... that is my suspicion...

Yes, the charging system should run everything. As long as it's working correctly.
Yes, a faulty connection, or failing rheostat/grip heater, could throw faults.
But don't be too quick to discount a charging system problem. A weak, undercharged battery, a under performing stator or even a coroded ground somewhere could do it too.

Have you pulled trouble codes?

I see your riding a 12, I would say it might be a safe bet to have a voltage regulator at home or with you on the bike and the tools to change it out if, I mean when it poops in it’s knickers .......
