Just a reminder, the diag chart that I posted is for a 2006 not a 2002. I don't know how much difference there might be between the 2 years. I see the cruise module for the 2002 has a -98c number while the 2006 uses a -04 module. Sorry, but I don't have the Elec Diag manual for 2002, just the service manual which does not cover diagnostics.
I looked over the wiring diagram, the real action element in the cruise/brake shutoff system is in the relay driven from the handlebar and foot brake signal. A fault in that relay would cause my symptoms - a "brake on" signal when the brakes are clearly off.
I encountered the problem on a return trip from Pennsylvania last week. Cruise wouldn't shut off with the front brake. I followed the cruise control diagnostic shown on You Tube 'fix my hog'. That apparently solved the problem, works fine now.
