Changed oil on mine and wife's bike yesterday. Decided to do cold, never did before. Refill was maybe few ounces less than normal but he big plus was NO OIL FILTER MESS. Filter was empty. I change oil and filter often, not really worried about few ounces more of old oil left. Oil drained little slow but did filter and cleaned air cleaner while it drained. I might do it again this way.
Kicker was I bought new oil filter catcher, only got couple drops in it. LOL
I much prefer to run at least several miles and warm everything up. Get all the contaminants suspended and oil flows easier. But I guess to each his own. My preference....
Very little in either filter, spilled about 3 drops unscrewing, dumped in pan, very little. Not full. Both touring bikes parked end of fall, heated garage. I was pleasantly surprised too.
You may want to change to a different oil filter manufacturer. The oil filter should have an anti backflow gasket that keeps oil in the filter after engine shut off. Other wise each cold start is a dry start. Hope this helps.
After I though about it, most must does drain out of filter after months sitting. I have heard bike clatter a few seconds after setting long time, oil filter drains back.
Interesting but think I will stick with recommended way. I just take precautions and put cardboard under the bike. Then if I still get any oil on the floor a bit of cat litter does the trick.

No I use Harley, and they have anti backflow. Must be after months though, they must leak a bit sometimes, seen it, heard it.

LOL I hear ya nobody, I have tried it all, rags, cardboard, plastic. It's not the floor, it's the wires and frame that is a mess.
