Never had a rear tire blow, just slow leaks from nails, but had a freak problem with a front tire once. In 1998, riding on the I-10 at about 60mph I felt the front of the RK weave a bit, as if a strong wind was hitting it down low. Looking down at the front wheel revealed it was completely flat, and maintained complete control until the speed got down to about 10 mph, when I almost lost it. The tire never broke its bead and no damage was done. What happened was that something, to date unknown, struck the rubber tire stem and sliced it, putting a small nick in the wheel on its way. It was a construction area and there was a concrete partition on the left and no traffic on the right. The nature of the striking object remains a mystery.
Man, you were lucky!

DANG. Just when I was almost over my constant fear of hitting a deer. Are there any systems (such as tubes) that protect from blowouts? What do the police departments use?

Tater, we ran over something that put a rather large hole in the tire. It was so big, you could almost see inside the tire through the hole, prob big enough to stick a 16 penny nail in! Whatever it was put a good size dent in my fender when it came out. Thanks and yes, we could have been worse off! Oh yeah, we were wearing helmets but neither had more than a couple of scratches on them.

Here's a pic of the puncture, a little fuzzy as it was taken while the bike was on a trailer:

Is it the photo or is this tire bald?

I was on the Gold Wing owners site and see where a bunch of those guys have switched to run flat car tires. Wonder if that could be an option on Harley cruisers?

Still remember the blowout I had on my rear tire in 1975 on my Norton. Scary as hell.

For what it's worth, I've been riding with Ride-On tire sealant in front and rear. Don't know if it would ever help in one of these situations -- maybe with a nail, but wouldn't with what most of you have encountered. Probably helps seal slow leaks more than anything else.

I also run this product - I did a lot of research on it and if it just allows me that extra few seconds to get the speed down then it is worth the $30 for both tires... Check it out and do your own homework on it...

The question has been ask here - run flat tires for motorcycles??? has the industry gone this direction yet???

Hey DevilDog,

Glad your Lt. and his wife are recovering. Glad it wasn't any worse.

Dunlop does make a tire for Police Bikes that has a very stiff bead, which is supposed to allow you to run a bit longer on a flat....

had a - not necessarily a blowout as the tire was still usable - but a very quick leak. was doing about 70 down I65 with to-be-wife and camping equipment, etc. wanted to check the temp of the engine because of the load so i slipped off my left glove. engine was fine. i was slipping the glove back on, tricky at best. had a full face on. glove was half way on. front end started to wobble. semi in front, semi in back, semi to the left. slowly released the gas - no brake. went on the shoulder at around 30-40. started to really wobble around 20. applied breaks at slow speed. tire was flopping all over. removed the wheel, went to gas station and had a plug put in. i carried an extra inner tube. i also had the seal junk in the tire.

skill - nope - lucky

i have heard that the seal junk in the inner tube is okay, but does cause a balancing issue. also the seal junk should not be used in tubeless as it can get all over and doesn't really work. wish i could find where it said that.

i am researching run flat tires for bikes - if i get anything interesting i will pass it on
