You are kidding us about the MOCO responding to this or any other problem aren't you????!!!!!
ORIGINAL: Greybeardrider
OK, you guys are scaring me now. I realize most of you are riding newer bikes, ( mine's an '87) ,but I have noticed the shifter seems to rattle a lot. Now I know what I gotta do tomorrow,...get down and look it over, and tighten. I guess I'm one of the few who likes, and uses the heel shifter, and want to keep it,......along with the toe shifter too .
I'm amazed how many are falling off of new bikes. Has the Moco responded as to why?
I've had heel-toe shifters on my last two H-D's and they've both had this problem. It always seems that the splines in the shift lever wear faster than the shaft, so I replaced the levers with aftermarket pieces from E-Z Shift. I'd replaced two stock toe levers and one shaft when a buddy told me about the E-Z Shift. This toe lever is also longer, giving you more foot room on your boards... I've ridden over 40,000 miles and no more loose shifter problems. They also offer an extended brake lever
Interesting that some of you don't use the heel shifter. No one I know upshifts with the toe..........years ago I went to the HD Police Operators course and they had a fit if you didn't shift with the heel. Said only Japanese bikes were toe shifted.
Just an observation.........everyone on an HD is an individual but we're all the same when you come down to it!!
I have had the shifter arms fall off the last three bikes I have owned but I was able to remedy the problem on the SG with a flat washer from Home Depot, some red Loctite and a wood clamp. I can take it on and off whenever I need to and it never falls off.
toe shifter fell off last nite on the highway...wife and i were on the highway on the way to a poison/ratt concert and i felt something hit me leg and heard a metal 'ping' sound...looked down and didn't notice right off...but then when it was time to down shift...nice surprise...anyways, guess i'm gonna call the dealer and see what's the word...
I like my extended heel shifter. Gives me room to put my boot. Had the sameproblem for a long time. Drilled out to 5/16, used grade 8 allen head fine thread bolts, castle and fiber lock nuts. replaced shaft (twice) and shaft bushing. drilled and tapped for set screws.
Okay guys, here is in easy fix that worked for me on my SG. I noticed when washing the bike one day that the heel shifter was loose. I took a standard allen wrench and tried to tighten it, but it wouldn't go any tighter. I took the shifter off and started fooling around with it a little bit and for what ever reason it the bolt seemed to bind. I applied a small amount of never sieze to the bolt and it tightened right up. I have ridden about two hundred miles and still tight. The shifter is tight on the shaft and has no play.
