tirijo,

Read my reply right above yours. I don't think you will need the locktite. As I said in my post I have ridden about 200 hundred miles and it is still tight. A little grease or anti sieze will work fine.
I was involved in many types of racing over the years and I never ever put locktite on a bolt. A little anti sieze will help the bolt seat tightly as it should.

Just wait till it happens going into a 20 mph corner[:@] Mine downshifted, once, then I watched the toe shifter bounce over a cliff. No problem, but I had to ride another 200 miles home to get the spare one, thatI got for $5 at a yard sale, to put on.

I have to leave the heal shifter on cuz my flip flop strap gets caught on the front lever if i just use my toe. J/K. This is the first bike I've had that has a heal/toe shifter and now I've gotten used to it.

Interesting that some of you don't use the heel shifter. No one I know upshifts with the toe..........years ago I went to the HD Police Operators course and they had a fit if you didn't shift with the heel. Said only Japanese bikes were toe shifted.

ORIGINAL: fastolds

I was running along about 80MPH in 6th gear, when I came into town and went to down shift, to my surprise the shifter was gone!! I coasted into a machine shop I do work for now and then that was at the edge of town. I called a friend to give me a ride to search for the darn thing. A 1/2 hour later I happened to see the semi chrome piece out of the corner of my eye. I can't believe I actually found it!! The heal toe shifters with shaft came off the back linkage. The bolt was still tight so what gives?
This is on an 07 FLHTC with 2300 miles.
Time for warranty service. The screw on both the inside and outside of the shaft fit in a groove that if machined properly shouldn't allow the shaft to come out, unless that is the screw works its way completely out (not likely).

I've seen these machined improperly where the threads on the levers are too far out for the screw to fit in the shaft's groove, and that will allow it to work its way loose in time. Take it back to the HD shop and make them replace the defective parts, making sure to check the new part(s) for correct fit.

Think most everyone has had the problem. I just put loctite and tightened it down. So far so good. This also my second set of shifters. Lost my first ones on I-495 in DC. AND NO WAY was I going to try and recover them there

HD-Maxima,
200 miles is just a Saturday-morning ride........... Let us know how it's holding up after 1K or so. Checked mine tonight and both very rigid/tight after about 4500 miles.

Hmmmpf, I've got an '06 with 42,000 miles on it and never had a problem with the front or rear shifters (I use both of them). I did have the shifter linkage fall off though due to the cheap assed ball joints used. I replaced them with some real ball joints and never had another problem.
