Mobil 1 VTwin in the engine
Mobil 1 75w90 gear oil in the trans
HD Formula Plus in the primary although in a pinch I'd probably use any dino 10W40 or 20W50 oil. The primary don't need no expensive synthetic. It's just keeping the primary chain and clutch plates lubricated and cool.
Red Line MTL in primary, Red Line Heavy Shock Proof in trans. and will do Red line in motor next change.
I tried Red Line in trans first and it made a big diffenence in trans noise and smoothness. Decided to try MTL in primary 2 weeks ago. Made things much quieter. Shifting noise is almost none. Since both Red line products have made me happy I will go with it in the motor next oil change.
I have used 5w30 once in the primary....roadside repair. It worked fine, but there was a little slippage. I believe it was due to energy conservation. I recommend at a minimum 10w40 though.
I mainly use ANY diesel 15w40 in the primary. It is inexpensive and can be found almost anywhere. However, sometimes I end up using any 20w50 laying around the shop.
For the past 20+ years.....the primary gets 15w40 diesel oil
transmission gets 80w90 GL5
engine gets 20w50 for warm months and 15w40 for cold months
