My 17 SGS with quick release tour pak feels much lighter than the 12 ultra classic it replaced and has almost as much carrying capacity, missing only the lowers.

The issue with the two bikes is WHERE the weight is. The street glides weight is up high and forward due to its fork mounted fairing packed full of electronics. Where as the Road Kings added weight is lower on the bike with added accessories, rear crash bars, chrome trim...etc. Doesnt sound like much, but it adds up. But the location of the weight down low, vs up high, is why the Road King handles so well, for the barge that it is.
Right you are. the Street Glide is in the Touring class so we must declare you correct.

Weight should not be the one and only factor.
For me the Road King wins for the seat. The passenger seat that is. My wife would reject the Street Glide just by looking at
the seat. Also it comes with passenger floorboards. For me I will add a luggage rack and passenger backrest. More weight..

I would like to see a few more pounds taken off the Road King. Some options have been mentioned here.
One that would cost nothing is remove the spotlights, I never use them on my Electro Glide.

The lower a bike's center of gravity is, the lighter it will feel. The Boss Hoss is easier to lift of the kickstand than an Ultra, even though it weighs a lot more.

Moving bikes around the shop I find the rk feels considerably lighter than most other Harleys. I guess it’s all about balance. For the small difference in weight- I am amazed at how heavy a dresser feels.
When riding they don’t seem so heavy.

A new winner! another member of the Touring lineup.

However, I do not consider the Road King Special to be a touring bike because it has no windshield.

I know, silly of me. just tired of bugs in my teeth.

Until recently I never realized how close in weight they were. But I guess, thinking about it they are both the same bike, different accessories ... for us the RK won simply because my bike is the escape from the world around me ... "electronics" which is my work day (security systems/networking/video ect) and if I am correct the Road King has a better "touring" ride with its larger shocks. (im sure someone will correct me if I am wrong, ha ha)

I've seen small, light weight women (and men) handle the largest and heaviest of HD cruisers with little to no effort. It's all about technique. Slow speed maneuvers separate the riders with good practiced technique from those that just hop on and twist the wrist. The funniest thing I've seen was a couple of "hell's angels want-to-be's" geared up in their finest leathers covered with patches who both dropped their Electra Glides while trying to park in a Home Depot parking lot last year........guess one thought the front brake was perfect for stopping below 5 mph while turning the front wheel and fell over into his buddy who, in turn, also fell over. What was really entertaining was watching both trying to lift their machines back upright....the WRONG way....LOL

Just like the answer to the question: "How do you get to Carnegie Hall?" PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.
