Its probably the same as the OPs problem. One of two things- first check the Variable Speed Sensor. Pull it off and clean the metal off. If it continues to act up replace the VSS. If that doesn't work its your speedo unit.

How long since a transmission lube change, a drain and refill might get rid of most of the particles floating around.

A drain and fill will get rid of the stuff that's suspended and flowing around but the stuff already on the sensor is stuck there on the magnet and will not come out unless you pull the sensor and wipe it off. Since the sensor is not a regular maintenance item most folks wont ever clean it unless there's an issue.

New here, this is the topic I'm chasing at the moment. 2001 FLHTCI, 18,000 mi. Intermittent speedometer. Have done some research, cleaned the sensor, actually have a new sensor not yet installed. My hesitation to install because.... this only fails intermittently AND... when it does fail, if I lock my throttle and move the wire harness between the tank and the fork/fairing up and down, it will come back on and off on and off as I move the wire harness then stays on. This happens at least once per day riding. Based on this I suspect the wiring harness where I can move it and get the problem to come and go. I think it's the wiring harness.. but... how to figure out what wire is causing the problem. HOPEFULLY, someone will tell me they had the exact same problem and replacing the sensor solved it, which is a vastly easier problem to fix. Thoughts? thank you, Mike

I agree, the standard answer has been to remove the sensor, clean it, reinstall it and if that fixes the problem, that's good. BUT if the problem repeats, replace the sensor. If there is old fluid with a generous supply of metal particles, even the new sensor will gunk up soon enough without the fluid change. Clean the sensor AND change the fluid if it has been a while. Then if the sensor messes up again, the replacement makes sense.
