08 FLHTCU with 50,000 miles and I have some trans fluid leaking behind the pulley on the trans main shaft. I'm looking at the exploded view of the trans with pulley assembly and it looks like I have to replace the oil seal behind the pulley. I have the inner/outer primary removed and I was gonna take it to the local shop to have them remove the pulley and change the oil seal so I can put it back together. This is where the problem is...local shop says minimum$800.00 to do the job because the oil seal isn't the problem its the shaft that has to be removed and replaced ( common six speed issue). I call BS and I think the pulley can come off, replace the seal and probably the bearing while its opened up and problem solved. Does anybody have some experience with this situation?
Thanks!!!
I'm thinking this must not be a Harley dealer you are talking to.
If you are sure the leak is coming from behind the pulley (and not the shifter shaft seal) then it is most likely the large seal (12074) that rides on the driven output shaft gear assembly. This assembly rides in the bearing (8967A) behind that seal and has no contact with the output shaft. The seal that does ride on the output shaft would leak in front of the pulley. This seal is often taken out when the inner primary bearing race moves inward on the output shaft which is pretty common on bigger builds.
Once you remove the pulley you should be able to remove and replace the seal on the driven output shaft gear assembly. You would not be able to remove the bearing however, It is pressed into the transmission case before the gear set is installed.
Thanks for your reply. It isnt the harley dealer but the guy was a mechanic at the local dealer. Its exactly what I thought it was and I guess Im done with that shop. I know he has to make money, but wtf.
Gonna order the seal, take it in and have the pulley removed and get back on the bike.
