Default 2008 gas tank removal

First, thanks for reading and responding. I have an 08 Ultra Classic that is EFI. Working on a project that requires fuel tank removal. From my owners manual, these should not be a fuel line shut off and I can not find one, check. I can not find a fuel line cross over, thus can drain tank that way. So, it appears that I must siphon the gas out the top and into a storage can? Or is there a way to drain fuel through out this fitting? I can find nothing online to help with how to drain fuel out of fitting, that is located on left side of bike. Any help would be appreciated. See pic for reference.

you don't need to siphon any fuel out. you've got a quick disconnect there. procedure is pretty well explained in the manual. if you don't have a manual, send me your email address and i'll forward a couple of page scans to you from my 2013, should be the same procedure.

I never bothered draining the tank before removal, even if it's almost full. Just disconnect it, unbolt it, and lift it off. Is it heavy? A bit, yes. But not unmanageable. I just grab it and lift it off. Then i have a foam pad I set it on, on the garage floor.

If it was the 18gal fuel cell from my chevelle I was picking up out of the trunk, then yes I would drain it. But, its only 6 gallons at most. According to the interwebs gas weighs 6lbs per gallon. 36lbs is manageable in my book.

Just my opinion but I'm sure someone will come behind me and correct me. Not trying to be a manly man, just taking an extra step out of the process.

I hear ya. But I plan to paint the tank so I figured I would drain it first, while on the bike, to keep it more stable.

Also, is there a crossover line? I can't seem to see one at this point.

You’d see the crossover if it had one, they stick out like a sore thumb. You can get a pump siphon at the hardware store for pretty cheap. They work quick and have a decent amount of hose to reach the corners of the tank. You won’t get it all until you have the tank off but you can get most of it at least.

EFI bikes do not have a fuel shutoff … the crossover line should be on the front of the tank

Ty all for your replies and helping me understand this process. Okay just a few clarifying question. So the quick disconnect, this acts the same way one does on a air hose in a garage? Once disconnected, no fuel runs out of either line or tank? If so, and with no siphon pump, I'll need to manually siphon gas out of tank, once disconnected via hose through filler hole where gas cap goes?

if you haven't started your bike in a while, there shouldn't be pressure in the fuel line, so you might lose a couple of drops of fuel. if you have primed your pump, there is a procedure for clearing the pressure out of the line.
