Just did rear pads on my 2000 Ultra this morning. I just pulled the axle. total time involved was less than 20 minutes start to finish. Jacked the bike up enough to take the weight off the axle so it slid out nice and easy, without getting air under the tire. Changing the pads without pulling the tire seems like more work/hassle than pulling the caliper. The pads arent that much fun to try and jockey around with the anti-rattle spring as it is, I wouldnt want to do it in closer confines or find myself fighting compressing the pistons. with the caliper off, it was a breeze

The simple solution in the future is to change the pads when you change the tire. For me the life is about the same and the wheel is already off.
