Default Oil Filter Help

So last night I decided to change the engine oil on my 2003 Road King. Well the person that had it before me must have put the filter on with a wrench and not hand tight. The regular hd oil filter remover just rounded off the flats on the filter. So I have an oil filter wrench that is the type with a metal band that gets tighter as you pull down on it. It punctured the filter. Do any of you guys have any ideas for my to try to get this damn filter off?

Stab a screwdriver through the top and use that as a lever. It will still probably tear the filter housing some so you may have to do it more than once in different spots before you’re able to spin it off by hand.

Yup......happens all the time......and theres another recent thread about this........

LARGE screwdriver at a 45* down angle in the area circled.......in the middle to the filter is the center pipe.......you're going to get underneath it and pull down........that gives you some leverage to get it off..........sometimes a pia........but keep at it........

Use the wrench you used last and move it closer to the gasket end where it won’t crush as easy. Remove the regulator if you need more room to reach it.

I changed my oil Saturday and I think the same tech must have tighted my filter. At least you have room to work. Try that strap wrench closer to the bottom of the filter. One thing that worked for me was to go slow when trying to loosen it up. A chisel on the crimp band at the bottom might loosen it up to for you. Good Luck

This. As close as you can get it to the gasket end.

Honestly not trying to be smartassed in the wake of your difficulties but consider a permanent filter when you replace this one. Not only are they easy to work with; they filter better too and you can see inside em which is reassuring. Cleaning is simple and fast, regardless of what BS non-owners of these filters will speculate.

All that is too much work and you're bound to **** something up doing it. Just take the filter mount off, it's only 3 bolts; then put the filter in a vise and rotate the mount. I only have 80 IQ points, but I use ALL of them

strap wrench will take that right off because you can get it up to the top of the filter...

Otherwise, yea, pull the filter housing as nomadmax suggests.
