K&N filters have been banned by a lot of sportbike racing orgs because they blow out. I posted a warning about them on here and got flamed for it. Imagine that... people so married to a brand they flame someone with a genuine warning.
Why does anyone mess with a filter so hard to remove even when not over tightened? I only use the filter with a nut on the end like in link. Takes seconds to remove and dont need that "special" stupid Harley tool to get filter off. I recommend everyone use a similar filter. Sure saves alot of time and hassle. HD needs to wake up and go to a similar filter.
K&N makes an oil filter with the nut on the end too. Black is KN-171B and in chrome I believe is KN-171C.
HiFlo used to make the K&N filter..... HiFlo is a quality filter....
The new K&N filters are made in Korea, and there have been reports that the quality has suffered since they cut ties with HiFlo..... I read a thread (wanted to attach the link, but can't find it) about the difference between the old HiFlo K&N and the new Korean made K&N. It included pics to show some of the differences. There were a couple posts from different people who had issues with the new K&Ns.......
I had just bought a couple K&N filters from Amazon, for like $8 each.. After reading the thread, I saw from the pics that the ones I had purchased were the new Korean made K&N filters. They are now in the very back of my parts cabinet (I own/maintain 3 HDs), and I doubt I'll use them.
FWIW......... If you need a filter with a nut on the end, the HiFlo filter would be my choice...
Just ordered one of these cleanable and reusable filters. Always liked the concept and now they're finally under $100. I'll see how I like it and report back.
Pretty much the only filter wrench I use anymore. Never slips, misses the crank sensor. Happened to find it in the bargain bin at Menards, only $2. Figured I'd throw it away if it didn't work, but now I could throw all those other ones away and never miss 'em!
I tried one of these but it wouldn't hold onto the filter for some reason. I took it back to AutoZone for my $5-$7 😂.
Went to Harley and bought their 'gimmic' but it works for me.

I have been running the K&P type of reusable filter for 25,000 miles now. Is it worth the price? I don't care, I like it, it has benefits over paper filters that outweigh the cost in the end run. In addition, I just ordered a Moore Sensible filter relocation kit.
Had the same issue. Your going to toss the filter so the "pierce with large screwdriver and use as lever" worked for me. Never tried the filters with nut on the Harley but have used them on my BMW RT without issue.
