Default Intake questions, 96ci

okay - I am going to be honest here... I started searching, but I don't really know how to narrow down my search to be specific to my engine. I am looking at intakes, and I have some questions.
  1. Is a full intake really that much better for a bike that has an exhaust and FP3? Would a bigger, high flow filter be sufficient?
  2. I like the K&N intake, but I am concerned about rain. I have lowers, so I need the shorter intake. I ride in the rain a lot. I don't want to get water in the engine (obviously). Do I need a rain cover or will the exhaust be fine without it?
  3. Is there another performance intake that you would recommend?
Thank you - and if you have a link where I can do some reading, that would work too. I have the 96ci, just to be clear.

Brandon

If I understand your situation you have a 2008 Streetglide with aftermarket exhaust, a Vance & Hines FP3, and stock air filter assembly? You would like a recommendation for a High Flow Air Cleaner kit that completes your Stage I upgrade? Note that you search by year/model to get what you need in this case.

Here are some choices from Harley :

Note: some will reuse your stock air filter cover, others are a full package. Those that have rain sock options will show them.

Here are other non-Harley branded options for high-performance air cleaners:

This is kind of right. I have an 08 SG with exhaust and tuner. I am looking to round out the Stage 1 with the intake. Does a larger filter behind the stock cover offer as much performance as the full intake? At 1/3 the cost, a filter would be easier and cheaper, but I am not looking to save money at the expense of the performance. My other concern was rain. Does a completely open filter, like the cone style, have problems with riding in the rain?

I have an 08 and a 13 that both run the one similar to the revzilla link called the naked big sucker behind the stock cover. When you install that, it removes all the restrictive plastic you currently have behind the cover. I've literally ridden in hurricane and no problems. The cone style really don't flow that much better, they just look cool. Any minimal performance gain using the cone style over using the original football cover over an open high flow would be impossible to feel. Especially on a stock 96. Some don't like them because they can get in the way of your knee depending on how you sit on the bike. Others love them. As far as water getting in, even if it did, a little water mist while the engine is running wont hurt anything. Google water injection.

We would suggest an A/C equipped with an External Breather System, keeping the hot, oily air out of your engine and allowing it to only breathe cool, clean air, increasing engine longevity and performance.

Here's a REPORT LINK on External Breather Systems with lots of good info.

Also, here's a REPORT LINK on the difference between Outlaw Hiflow A/C Systems.
