Default Seal failure

The factory has started to experiment with different seals (as per my dealer/tech). He states "I called harley corp.and they want you to ride the bike 1,000 miles to see how much fluid transfers from the trans to the primary" . "By the way, I had to put 14.5 oz.of fluid in the trans and your primary case had 14.5 oz too much". All I can say is watch for this before your factory warranty is up. I caught it with 2 months to spare. Lucky me ! ?

My mistake if this is really a thing. There must be some changes to the M8’s I don’t know about. The only possible way this could happen on my 2009 would be for it to somehow flow through the center of the main shaft where the clutch push rod is. There is no other connection between the two on my bike.

It is real. My dealer/service guys are top notch and because I do not want to throw them under the bus, I will say, they believe me 100% but mother harley wants further proof or hd is stalling for a cure to the problem. I will have the 1,000 miles on the top off in 2 days, so we'll see what happens next. Although I have been wrenching harley and metrics over 25 years , I need an esp plan because my factory plan expires in 2 months. No way I am trading for new any time soon. Know of any (esp) plans ? Safe travels. Keep the sky above and the road below !

I have the same issue with my 18 RK. I had it serviced 2 weeks ago at 4400 miles and my independent found that the transmission was down half a quart and the primary was overfilled (I specifically asked him to check for this after reading the forums ). I returned Sunday from a 4400 mile trip to Colorado. I checked the trans oil level in Colorado after 2200 miles and it looked good, will check it again tomorrow and see what it looks like now... bike now has 8800 miles.

If the trans oil level is down significantly I'll bring it to the dealership and start the warranty process. I hate to do that, I haven't had good luck with my local dealership's service dept., but I guess I need to get it documented if it's still happening.

By the way, my buddy who road out with me on his 2 week old 18 SGS checked the trans level on his while in Colorado, and it was at ADD. His is bringing his to the dealership tomorrow.

Number 13 in this schematic is the seal you need. Oil can flow from the transmission into the primary if this seal leaks. Although it could also be a problem with the mainshaft. Since it appears H-D is having a number of these, it's a good bet either they had a problem with assembly at the factory screwing up the seal, or out of spec components.

He is pretty smart... But I guess we all have our own opinions. Hate it that you all are having so many issues with your bikes. Hopefully Harley can get it fixed for you.

If I had an M8 with trans fluid migration and the dealer told me to ride it, they'd get it back with a locked up transmission.

Little known fact the 14,16, can have the issue as well. My 16 did it . They have a service TSB and solution on those years.
