Default Strange reading on fairing volt meter

I had this very strange thing happen yesterday after I had started my bike and proceeded to ride off to work. After about a mile of riding, I noticed my dummy check engine light was on and the voltage read 10. I figured ok, I’ll head home, park it and deal with it after work. I turned around and sure enough, dummy light goes out, volts read 14. After work, no problems, rode home and figured it was a fluke. This morning, I start up the bike, notice the volts read 10 but no check engine light. Gave it a couple revs and volts come up to 14. I had replaced the stator last year and just replaced the battery about 2 months ago. Guess it’s time to break out the multi meter and get some readings.

what do you guys think?

Thanks!

Just a guess but have you checked your connection at the "regulator to stator" ??

I think you are starting to have a problem, mine did same thing, stator was bad. I switched whole system for cycle electric 50 amp. which seems ok, but now I get dimming light at idle. never did before. good luck

Interesting if it’s the stator. It’s the stator from Baker. I rebuilt the entire primary with Baker parts.

Make sure your battery terminals are tight first.

Never changed the voltage regulator before? It's overdue. Do the stator checks for continuity and bad grounds first and voltage next.. should be above 20V at the output to the regulator. If all that is good and no bad connections, clean terminals etc.. you got a VR going bad. They go intermittent like that.

First thing I do when electrical gremlins start on motorized equipment is clean the main ground connection and clean the battery connections . It takes very little effort and I’d say 70% of the time it solves the problem. If not, you at least have a good base to start troubleshooting.

Default Voltage Regulator

Just had the same problem on my 2012 UL. Mine was an intermittent problem too. Replaced the Voltage Regulator and all is good. I would check the electrical connections first, just because that's free.

Check all your electrical connections and if they're all nice and tight, corrosion free, be prepared to get in touch with Cycle Electric for a new Regulator for your bike.
