I've been reading here and searching for answers about why it's such a pain finding neutral. So, this morning I put the bike on the jack, drained the primary, adjusted the clutch, filled it with Mobil 1, and went for a putt.
I'll be damned, it worked! So far, it drops right in.
So, for all you guys that made this recommendation, I thank you.
I really like Mobil 1 in my motor, but use Redline Primary Case fluid in the primary. The key to easy neutral is not to over fill the primary....just enough for the oil to just touch the bottom of the clutch basket when bike is straight up (not on kick stand).
Mobil 1 20w50 V-Twin Syn works for me, too.
Something else that works for me, I don't just stomp the shifter for neutral. I prefer heel or toe on the board and kind of a pivot or rocking move to go into neutral. Works from first or above. "Guessing the stomp" does not always turn out well.
At the risk of participating in yet another oil thread, I'll say that when I replaced my OE friction plates with Barnett Kevlar, they suggested using Dexron ATF for smoother operation in the primary. They wrote that HD Formula + would cause stickiness and that the tranny wouldn't go into neutral well.
Derned if that wasn't spot on! The clutch releases smoother and cleaner, and finding neutral has never been easier. I change the primary fluid when I change engine oil, so I'm not concerned about any longevity issues.
