Gang,
I've always wanted a RK. I love my 2012 SG but knowing what I know now, I wish I would have bought a RK. Over the weekend, I was looking at a 2017 RK from the dealership but its selling for $17K. That's more than I want to spend. Checking out Craigslist, I came across a 2005 RK with 18,450 miles. Man this ride is sweet looking. But I am concerned about owning a bike so old. I'm not saying that I want to sell my bike to get a 2005 but I'm wondering if buying an older bike is worth it.
Please check out this link and give me your thoughts, out side of my beloved wife, I think I'm in love...
let me clarify. What issues does a 2005 face and what should be upgraded? Maybe its the Gentlemen's Jack and I'm nearly ready to sell my bike for this RK.
Cam chain tensioner issue on TC 88’s up to 06 models if I remember correctly. Easy fix with the hydrholic tensioner conversion kit. Ive owned my 03 since late June of this year, had 29k on it when I bought it, and it’s trouble free. My cam chain tensioners still have a lot of life in them, so I’m not worrying.
The biggest cost I’ve run into since getting it, is I keep buying parts to make it “mine”. (seat, exhaust, bars, a/c, tires, misc)
Chain tensioners is about it. You may want to also pick up a brace to keep the rear end in check. The only thing i didnt like about my 01 was no 6th gear. 3000rpm at 70 can get a little tiring. Aside from that it was a pretty solid bike.
Everyone has different priorities along with money concerns. Were it me I would buy that sweet looking bike and keep what I have. The price is pretty good IMO and other than the aforementioned tensioners, the seat and exhaust are stock. I ain't that far away and glad I can resist the temptation. Well, let me know if you pass on it. I can make room if need be...
If you are not a guy that loves to work on his bike.....then maybe that is not for you.
My 02 runs great, looks great and get compliments every where I go.
I am always doing something to her.
Just my 2 cents.
Oh and I would get on my bike in the morning and ride to the west coast without a worry.
