01 ultra classic problem
have an 01 ultra. All stock. 98000 mile. Runs good up to 55 mph. Over that it seems to starve for fuel
if you open the throttle, it takes right off till it levels out to hold speed. I have replaced wires, plugs and tested the coil.
Any one have any ideas?
It sounds more like a fuel problem than an electrical one..... Have you done any recent work to the fuel system?
I would check the fuel filter/internal tank fuel lines, as "grbrown" suggested, if it's EFI. That is a well known problem, where the internal fuel line leaks due to rubbing/vibration, and certainly possible on a 2001 bike with 98K miles. Also, if it's EFI, you should have the MM EFI system, which may be in need of adjustment. There are a few threads on this forum that mention how to dial it in..
If it's a carb bike, check the "filter" (screen on the petcock inside the tank) for debris, or an inline filter if one was added. You may just have some accumulated junk in the tank, partially blocking that screen/filter, so enough fuel flows for low rpms, but is restricted for higher flow/rpms.... Another issue with some of the older tanks (happened to my 2001), the tank liner/paint that the MoCo used, starts peeling and coming off in chunks... it will partially block the screen @ the petcock and cause intermittent fuel starvation. Also if it's a carb bike, there is a vacuum action to the OEM petcock that will not allow fuel to flow without vacuum from the carb... check that vacuum line for cracks, etc...
There are a lot of things to check, before swapping out any parts.... I'm sure you will get other suggestions I have not mentioned
Good luck with the fix......
