Default Changing Chrome to black

My 15 SGS in Morocco Gold Pearl came with Chrome everything stock. I put black Heat Shields and black Mufflers on and plan on doing some more black.

I only plan to balance out the chrome, not eliminate 100% of it, probably some black covers, black Aux lights bracket and black taillight brackets and 4 point docking stuff, maaaaybeee a black handle bar eventually

If I do the forks in Black, do they get chipped, and is the black a maintenance issue?

Do the forks in black then cut some 3M film to wrap around the front of them to protect against any chips. Voila!

Are you painting these things yourself?

I had a lot of stock parts powderocated for about 1/10th of what it would cost to buy the same parts in black. No issues to deal with. Powder coat is pretty tough stuff.

Most of the parts I got were used "pull off" parts so not too costly. Tank console was an Ebay coated part, primary cover was new. Me, I dont like pulling parts off, leaving my bike exposed-open awaiting return of parts. So I locate parts, order and when they arrive, bolt them on. That way my bikes not down, and so can be ridden while awaiting parts..

Save yourself some money and get the parts vinyl wrapped instead. That way if you want to go back to chrome, you can easily remove the wrap and not worry about dings

Buddy of mine painted his fork lowers black, chipped like crazy. Got them powder coated, not one chip since. Powder coat is the way to go. Waaaay tougher.

Had the lower fork powder coated gloss black on my 07 FXD and no chips in 4 years of riding. If you have someone that knows what they are doing the powder coating should hold up, every painted forks I have seen have chipped pretty bad but I am sure someone out there will disagree.

I have done my bike the route you’re looking to go, balance out chrome vs black. I had the front end powder coated a few years ago, and not a single issue with the finish. Just make sure you you research who you’re gonna have do it. It’s like anything else, if they don’t know what they are doing, it’s not going to last.
