I added a tour pack to my SG a couple of years ago. I went with the detachable hardware because I was sure I would be taking it off when I didn't need the storage. I haven't found a reason to take it off. It stays on 100% of the time.

removed it on my 08 (still have it on the '12), bike feels looser in the back end. Not in a bad way, but def handles different.

I only notice the difference because it is pretty much only on the bike when the wife wants to come along for a ride. She doesn't weigh much over a hundred pounds but her poking me in the ribs and telling me to slow down makes that tour pak feel like it is over a thousand pounds...

We have friends whose helmets have damaged paint - his on the back, hers on the front, where she head-butts him if she thinks he's going too fast!

Thank you.
JUst a note for you if you're ever at Myrtle Beach Bikeweek in South Carolina. DO NOT shoot at anyone trying to steal stuff ff your bike! You, not the thief, will be arrested and charged with attempted murder, and Murder 1 if he/she dies. Keep that in mind and act accordingly. That talk sounds macho and all on an internet forum, but it isn't good for anything but talk in real life.
Unfortunately, in my State at least, you can't shoot someone for stealing from you. I know, it sounds crazy, but it is the law. I can't explain why either. I don't understand what I am supposed to do if I see someone in my driveway breaking into my car and trying to hotwire it and drive away. Am I supposed to wish them a good day and happy touring? Why do I have to do that to a punk that feels like he doesn't have to work to get what he wants, and he can just take it from someone else that has worked hard to get it? NOw, if the thief comes into my HOME, all bets are off. He can be shot without any questions being asked by the police. But it HAS to be inside of the home. But it also goes for being in side your car too. If you are in your car and someone tries to break in to carjack you, you can blast their butt away!

I hope YOUR state has more common sense on this issue.

I should add up the weight of my passenger back rest and standard luggage rack as compared to my pack. I would guess the racks weigh about same for the tour pak. The tour pak is definitely heavier than the sissy bar and passenger back rest.

I put on a leather tour pak this winter but have not ridden yet.

I notice a slight difference in balance, definitely feels like a different stance but the sound of the exhaust is what I notice most.

My SG and RKCs felt more sporty without the TP.

One of the general complaints of the Touring model frames before 2014 was the forks flexing during turns. I never felt that flex on my SG or RKs until I mounted the TP. And the little bit of added weight of the lower fairings on my 09 Ultra flexed the forks even more. Weight changes the center of gravity, so depending on how you ride, changes can be noticed.

GOV5 is absolutely correct. It does sound macho too, but out in the middle of nowhere a confrontation with a thief often turns the thief violent. Then, in most states, if you feel physically threatened, out can come the pistol. And no, here and several other states a person does not have to be inside a home or vehicle. If the thief offers no demonstrable physical threat (outside a residence or vehicle)--a person is never permitted to shoot. This is when insurance becomes helpful, except for the deductible.

Good reminder from GOV5 though.

Less weight gives me better handling. As least it seems so. Plus it looks better......
