i can't really find a correct answer on this one. How in the world do I get Apple carplay to work on my 2019 SGS? Do I have to have the WHIM system or not? Is there a way to Bluetooth some headphones to the system and get it to come up? Thanks for the help.
In settings on the radio, if you see the option for wireless headset, you have a WHIM. If that option is not there, you do not have a WHIM.
A WHIM would be helpful if you are riding on your bike and want to activate Siri to perform functions. For example, if you are on a ride and want to find the nearest gas station, which a WHIM, you could just activate Siri on your Bluetooth headset and say, "Find nearest gas station.". Siri will find the closest gas station and ask, if you want directions or to call and again you could respond using your voice.
You could still use CarPlay without a WHIM and without a paired Bluetooth headset. You would need to have your phone connected directly to the USB connector in the fairing compartment while your phone is mounted to your bike using any of the hundreds of various phone mounts available - personally I recommend RAM mounts. The difference in this scenario is you would have to interact with CarPlay by using the touch screen on your Boom audio system or your iPhone screen. Of course this is ill advised as it could be dangerous to interact physically with any device while driving down the road. If your phone is mounted, I guess you could get your face as close to your phone as possible and activate Siri by screaming "Hey Siri" as loud as you can and screaming your responses to her questions.
If you do get a phone mount, make sure you don't forget to take your phone off the bike if you stop for lunch or stop for gas and go inside to pay. Of course, I would never do that or be too lazy to use the rubber thingy on the RAM mount to provide additional mounting security. I mean, really, would be too lazy to do that and lose their brand new iPhone X driving down I-95 on his way back from Myrtle Beach Bike Week?

Salesmen didnt even know about CarPlay until I told them. They all know about it now but had no clue when they took the training on the 19s as it was not mentioned.

Yea when I called them back the next day not a single person in the whole store new how it do it. But I'm not purchasing a $300 whim just to have apple carplay so I will just keep it like it is for now. I also don't want the wired bc I hate having to plug stuff in everywhere also.

Same thing in my SS Camaro, it won't work unless it's plugged in. Minor annoyance, but the navigation, text messaging and phone features make it worth it to me.
I have an old headset cable Im thinking about reading the resistance value of the mic on my helmet through the cord and then soldering a resistor in line on old cord right where it plugs into socket. Im thinking the head unit is looking for a resistance value to determine if mic is plugged in. Just gotta fins pin outs on cord.
I posted about this previously to get Apple CarPlay to work you do not have to have a whim or any type of microphone connected. All you have to do is have the dealer hook up digital tech and click the box for the whim. Previous models would not let them if no whim was installed. 2019 GTS boom box will. I have a 2019 SGS as well. By doing this you will have full functionality of CarPlay your phone will ring text will come through. The only thing you cant do is talk back. For example my phone rings through the boom box I then answer it on my phone hit the speaker button on my phone and talk through there my phone is mounted on a perch mount. Kinda a pain but its cheaper than a whim my dealer flashed it for free. Ill answer and say hold on Im on the bike and cant hear you then pull over to have my conversation. The phone does have to be connected through the USB port in the cubby to get CarPlay though. All other parts of the phone work. Maps. Google maps. Waze. Music. Spotify. Etc. search my posts to see what I posted I cant now. Hope that helps
