Some states require front and rear license plates on automobiles.
Others only require one plate on rear. But every state allows you to
governed by the license law in your state. It would seem to me that the
same would apply here.
However, if I were pulled over I don’t imagine I would be given the opportunity
to debate that point.

Your vehicle registration, if it follows the requirements of your state of residence, will suffice in other states as long as you are just visiting that state .... (many states will define in their vehicle codes, when you no longer qualify as a "visitor" in their state for the purposes of licensing requirements)
The complication in your case, is that there will be no plate/tag on the trailer. So if you are stopped by an LEO, he may not be willing to just go by what you tell him...
Think of it this way, if you got a cite... what paperwork would you bring to a court to show the Judge that a plate isn't required on your trailer.....?
That paperwork (ownership/origin/reg requirements), if showed to an LEO, would be enough to convince 99% of LEOs that you are complying with your state laws and spare you a citation...
For your own convenience, carry some paperwork on the trailer and IF you are ever stopped (probably won't even be stopped), a calm explanation of why you don't have a plate/tag, along with some paperwork, will go a long way to avoid any issues....

I bought an enclosed trailer in Wisconsin and they didn't require a tag under 3000# GVWR. Since I travel, I made the most official looking tag I could on my printer, cut it to size and laminated it with the state, the weight, and No Tag Required. I never got pulled over. I believe in stacking the odds in my favor.

A similar "state differences" exists with regard to vehicle registrations. Here in my state of KY all vehicle registrations state, basically, that "State law requires that, EXCEPT FOR MOTORCYCLES, this registration be carried in the vehicle at all times".
So, when traveling out of KY, just how would I convince a State Trooper that I am not required in my home state of KY to carry my motorcycle registration with me? Well I just show him the fookin' registration, of course LOL !!!
