So the SE Spring will not keep it from slipping? There seems to be a lot of post saying the SE did the trick?
I'm no expert, but my current bike slipped rather easily if I was hammering on it and shifting quickly. The clutch seemed able to hold power on a roll-on, but didn't have the power to catch the engine on a fast shift. Crisp as can be now with the HD spring. Yes, I tried adjusting the clutch before installing the spring.
Way I see it, HD includes the SE spring in their 103/255 cam kit for 96" bikes. Why shouldn't I have it in my bike that came with a 103 and has 255 cams?
I had read where clutch cable failures were common with the SE spring so I went with a spring that AIM offered that was between the standard spring and the SE in force. The clutch spring in the 96" motors is pretty anemic. When I built the motor I went with the AIM VPC and have had no issues.
That sucks about the gasket issue but like others mentioned some times you get away with out needing them and sometimes you don't. I have a derby cover gasket sitting in my tool box that I haven't used in 5 years. If I didn't have I am sure I would have a leak after servicing it. At least that is a common part and you should be back on the road in no time.
I added the SE spring and clutch plates. Much better now, no slipping at all. And if you want to slam through the gears, it grabs like a ****. Not much difference in the pull.
Thanks for the input... My bike is not a powerhouse but it will eat a stock 96 for lunch and as a matter of fact I haven't had any problems pulling on 103's after adding the cam either. So yes I think with that added power the upgraded spring is needed. That said the stock spring did have some slippage when banging through the gears and uphill loaded 5th and 6th pulls slip as well.
My guess is I got that issue solved... We'll see how the cables hold up??
IMHO cables snap through lack of lubrication unless you pull the nipples off the end.
Less than 2500 miles on this one with a SE spring. This was the second cable this happened to. Added note...it doesn't matter what spring you have in there when this happens, it's gonna slip!!!!!
